Fiberglass or "fiberglass-composite" doors have become a very
popular alternative to wood. They have realistic wood grain and, when given
wood stains, can imitate cherry, oak, walnut or other popular wood tones.
The result is a door that bears an amazing resemblance to wood, even when
viewed up close.
Fiberglass construction varies. Typically, CFC-free polyurethane is foamed
between wooden styles and rails to provide the core. Surfaces are made from
tough, compression-molded fiberglass composite. Fiberglass doors are strong,
heavier than steel doors and highly resistant to weathering, whether installed
in Alaska or Florida. Because they won't oxidize or rust, they're a particularly
good choice for ocean climates.
